Four steps of installing home video security systems effortlessly

Step 1:  Assemble all the components and accessories

Before embarking on the process of installing a video security system please confirm the specific locations that you want to install the security cameras and make sure the identified locations are not blocked. After chosen the installation site, assemble the components of the video security system. You’ll need security cameras, digital video recorder (DVR), TV monitor (or computer screen) and accessories like video cables (no video cables is needed if it is a wireless system), power adapters, mounting brackets and screws; mounting tools like screw driver, and electric drill are also essential, too. If the DVR you bought didn’t contain a build-in HDD, install one before installation. After all this is well prepared, you can start installing the system now.

* Please note that most DVR kits come with mounting accessories like video cables, power adapters and screws, if they didn’t appear in the package, contact your manufacturer.

Step 2:  Mount the cameras to the wall

The best place to mount the cameras is always somewhere above the door, beneath the eaves or ceiling corners where cameras can hold a remarkable looking-down view. Make sure the cameras capture a wide unblocked view of the place your want to monitor. Basically, most cameras are equipped with a power cable to get power supply and a video cable to transmit video signals and most cameras come with power adapters; so make sure all the locations you want to install the cameras are close to a wall socket and the cables can run properly between the cameras and the sockets, otherwise, you’ll need a extension power cable to power the cameras. Some cameras come with sticky pad to get them adhered to the wall, but in the long-term concerns, the safest way to mount a camera is screw it on the wall. So first mount the bracket to the specific locations on the wall and mark each position where the screw goes, then use the electric drill to drill holes for the screws, screw the bracket to the wall, attach the camera to the bracket tightly, adjust the camera to make sure it reaches a desired angle from where you can hold a panoramic view of what you want to keep an eye on.

Step 3:  Connect the cameras to the DVR

Once the cameras are well mounted on the wall, plug the round end of the power adapter to the power input port of the camera and plug the other end to the jack on the wall, then the cameras are powered. Considering that the distance between the mounted cameras and DVR is too far, most video surveillance kit comes with extended video cables. So, connect one end of the video cable to the video-out port of the camera, and plug the other end of the video cable to the video-input port of the DVR. Most DVRs on the market support 4/8/16 channels video-in, so just connect the cameras to the corresponding video input ports on the DVR and note which channel you plug into in order to view the video of each camera. Last but not least, plug the power adapter of the DVR into the socket so the DVR is powered, too.

Step 4:  View the surveillance video on the monitor

As long as the cameras are well connected to the DVR, you can view the video on the monitor. The last device you need now is a monitor no matter it is a TV monitor or a computer screen. Generally, there are three video output port available on the DVR: BNC, VGA and HDMI, the BNC and VGA port transmit standard video signals while HDMI port transmit high definition video signals. Use a BNC, VGA or HDMI cable to connect the DVR and your monitor, then you will get the real-time monitoring video of your home. Additionally, configurations and setups can be done once the monitor is connected. And you can plug a USB mouse to the DVR via the USB port and do the settings on the screen.
