7K HD Pro Camera

Maverick of UHD IP Cameras: 4.5K, 5K, 6K, 7K resolution

Some of you may know 4K UHD, 8K UHD resolution, but never heard of 4.5K, 5K, 6K, 7K resolution. While several leading video surveillance product manufacturers released the 4K UHD IP cameras, the Canadian company - Avigilon, recently announced the release of 7K HD Pro network camera.  In addition to 7K, Avigilon has a complete UHD IP camera range includes 4K, 4.5K, 5K, 6K versions.

1#. How does the network camera achieve 7K resolution?

According to Avigilon, the new 6K and 7K HD Pro cameras utilize a 1/2.7-inch progressive scan 30 MP CMOS image sensor that captures best-in-class image details over vast areas, providing maximum coverage options. The capabilities of video encoding and streaming are always the challenges when security network cameras need to support much higher resolution. Currently, this 7K HD Pro camera only can deliver video at 8 frames per second, although it adopts Avigilon patent high definition stream management (HDSM) technology.

2#. Comparison among different UHD formats

The name of 7K refers to the horizontal resolution in the order of 7000 pixels, forming the total image dimensions of (7360x4128). To know the image resolution of different Ultra High Definition formats, you can read the following table:

Format Resolution (pixels) Aspect ratio Total Pixels
4K 3840x2160 16:9 8MP
4.5K 4608x2592 16:9 12MP
5K 4944x3280 16:9 16MP
6K 6016x4008 16:9 24MP
7K 7360x4128 16:9 30MP
8K 7680x4320 16:9 33MP

3#. How is the UHD camera best utilized?

Some specific video surveillance applications that require ultra high definition image quality would certainly benefit from 7K UHD IP cameras. The versatile camera is best-used in a variety of settings, and ideal for casino, stadiums, transportation, critical infrastructure and similar applications. However, due to the relative infancy of ultra high definition, we think the implementation of 7K video surveillance system will be very slow.

4#. What are challenges to 4K/8K UHD technology?

When achieving ultra-high definition image quality, 8K UHD technology inevitably encounters occupying massive data storage space, increased large network bandwidth, and video decoding to display etc problems.

Bandwidth & storage issue: the burden of bandwidth and storage is the biggest problem in real usage of 4K/8K UHD, 8K (7680×43200) is 16x the resolution of full HD and 4x the resolution of 4K. The required network bandwidth for current 1080P video stream is in the range of 2MP-4MP, and the 8K video transmission bandwidth required to reach 40 MB or more.

Video encoding & decoding: the front-end HD video capturing requires HD video encoding + ultra high definition lens. Today, the pioneer HD video solution providers (Hisilicon, Ambarrela) only have the capability to produce high-performance video encoders which offer max. 4K@60fps video encoding capability. Moreover, 8K video requires 8K UHD TV to display, currently there are few manufacturers can produce 8K UHD TVs.

In addition, the current UHD technology is still exploratory stage, the lack of uniform standards, and the cost is too high, resulting in 8K technology has not been widely adopted.
