An IP (Internet Protocol) camera consists of two core components; CMOS image sensor and SoC. The CMOS image sensor converts light to electrical signal, then transmit to SoC for video compression and output. Hisilicon, Texas Instrument, Ambarella are three main SoC solution providers in the world. Since Ambarella specializes in HD, UHD video technology and compression based on H.264 & H.265, the company gains market share from the booming IP camera market. Additionally, Ambarella won the bid to become SoC solution provider of Hikvision and Dahua, which are global leading video surveillance products manufacturers.
Compared with competitors, Ambarella owns many advantages, its SoC has much lower power consumption than Hisilicon & TI, meanwhile it offers high-efficient video encoding performance. From 2010 to 2015, Ambarella released A5S, A7, A7L, A9, A7LA, S2L, S3, A12W, H1 SoC.
Designed to meet the increasing demand for sports and flying camera. Ambarella H1 is a high-performance SoC which supports 4K ultra high definition H.264 double real time speed (60fps), and the new H.265/HEVC video standard for 4K UHD encoding at up to 30 fps. Apart from delivering high quality video, the SoC offers a new generation of image sensor pipeline with high dynamic range processing delivers high quality video and photos even working challenge lighting condition. In addition to rich smart video analysis features, it also includes advanced eletronic image stabilization (EIS).
Ambarella A12W (A12W-A0-RH) is a powerful ARM Cortex A9 processor for wearable camera. This SoC is fabricated at the 28-nm manufacturing process, offers a rich set of peripherals including one USB interface for connection to the 4G/LTE module, another USB 2.0 host is used for mass storage device. A12W utilizes top-notch technology to provide low power consumption feature, it is designed for long operation and transitions from a powered-off state to a fully functional state.
Ambarella S3 is the first H.265/HEVC SoC in Ambarella product portfolio, it offers up to twice compression efficiency of current H.264 IP camera. The S3 is able to encode H.265 video at up to 4096x2160 (4K) @ 30fps, or H.264 up to 4K @ 60fps. Additionally, S3 supports multiple streams and transcoding between H.264 and H.265 formats. It's based on 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM® Cortex®-A9 CPU architecture, includes comprehensive I/O interface including SLVS/MIPI®/HiSPI™ sensor interfaces, USB host and client and gigabit Ethernet.
Ambarella S3L is the lite version of S3, the S3L owns 5MP@30fps video encoding capability, it has been widely used in 4/5-megapixel IP cameras. Additionally, it offers HEVC/H.265 and H.264, MJPEG video compression to meet the demands for future IP surveillance. S3L features Ambarella HDR, 3D noise reduction and 180 degree fisheye lens correction, and offers smart video analytics.
Hereafter, the company released the S3Lm, which dedicated to provide HD video solution for consumer H.265 cloud cameras. Compared with S3 and S3L, the S3Lm comes with low-power design, offering 3MP@30fps or 4MP/5MP@20fps video encoding capability. It also belongs to Ambarella H.265 SoC family.
Ambarella S2L is a family of full HD camera system on Chip (SoC) designed for consumer, small business and professional IP camera security applications. The S2L features with Smart-AVC H.264 low bit-rate streaming technology that significantly reduces network bandwidth requirements. The camera is based on ARM cortex-A9 CPU to provide intelligent video analytic such as motion detection, audio analytic as breaking glass detection. The S2L offers video encoding 1080p @ 60 fps and up to 5 megapixel resolution.
A7LA enables full 1080p @ 30fps HD single- and dual-view camera configurations, supporting video recording through the front windshield as well as through the rear window or inside the vehicle. The A7LA’s combination of Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), smart auto-exposure, and full-resolution oversampling provide superior image quality, allowing the capture of license plates and other details, even in low-light conditions. A7LA SoCs include a high-speed, 700MHz ARM CPU to support advanced analytics algorithms including a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).
Based on Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, A9 provides high performance HD and Ultra HD video encoding with H.264/AVC format. It supports high frame-rate video for capturing fast-action sports with 1920x1080 video at 120 fps or 1280x720 video at 240 fps. A9 includes rich interface such as USB 2.0 to offer 4G/LTE wireless connectivity.
